PURPOSE OF THE JOB

As the Asphalt Laboratory Technician, you will actively participate in a collaborative team focused on testing asphalt materials for roofing and paving applications. You will provide testing support for the Asphalt Innovation Team, and will be working primarily in the laboratory preparing and testing different asphalt formulations and modified asphalt formulations. Your additional duties may include measurement of asphalt on the Capillary Rheometer and Dynamic Shear Rheometer, as well as preparation of filled and unfilled asphalt coating samples for execution of additional routine testing. Safe working practices will be critical to success.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrate a commitment to safety

· Participate in regular safety meetings and safety huddles

· Ensure rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and policies

· Ensure a commitment to zero accidents while working with hot asphalt and various chemicals

· Practice good housekeeping and maintenance habits

Asphalt Testing Support

· Understand and perform standard and nonstandard laboratory testing of asphalt materials (ASTM, AASHTO, and other methods), including rheological testing

· Accurately record measurements and data along with relevant observations for the requestor, and provide quality results to satisfy customer needs and expectations

· Understand the different physical properties of different types of asphalts while troubleshooting results

· Understand the different instruments and be able to troubleshoot each

· Balance multiple assignments across one or multiple projects and safety adapt to changing priorities

· Maintain a clean, safe and operational environment at all times

· Provide team support with calibrations, preventative maintenance, housekeeping and inventory

· Support and invent new test method development as needed

· Fully understand requestor requirements and provide trustworthy data on asphalt properties

· Utilize standard analytical equipment including rulers, thickness gauges, scales, ovens, presses, and related equipment

· Interface with other laboratory organizations for material characterization including the Roofing Test Laboratory, Mechanical Characterization Laboratory, and Analytical Laboratory

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· A four-year technical/laboratory/engineering/science degree is desired with 0-1 year of experience in laboratory operations desired

· OR

· A two-year technical/laboratory/engineering/science associate degree with 1-3 years of experience in laboratory operations in lieu of a four-year degree

· Must understand and have good basic computer skills: working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) required

· Ability to operate laboratory equipment and mechanical, hands-on aptitude with analytical equipment

· Ability to provide quality test results in a timely manner and communicate those results to management both verbally and written

· Ability to work both independently and within a group

· No travel required for this position

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

· Prior experience handling and testing asphalt and asphalt blends

· Prior experience with chemical and physical analytical tools, especially including high pressure liquid chromatography, dynamic shear rheology, and capillary rheology

· Preference for 2 years laboratory experience specifically with knowledge of ASTM testing methods

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

· Hands-on aptitude and flexibility to support the changing needs of customers, and agility to redirect work to the top business needs

· Comfortable working with asphalt and associated raw materials, operating laboratory instrumentation, and mechanical equipment, as well as measuring/mixing devices

· Track record of accuracy in data collection and transcription

· Ability to pay attention to details while sometimes performing repetitive work

· Ability to analyze data and suggest and implement improvements in product testing to improve the efficiency of operation
